November 2025 Senior Solutions Spotlight |
Welcome to this month’s edition of Outstanding Ohio’s Senior Solutions Spotlight! November brings a season of gathering, gratitude, and preparing our homes for the holidays. It’s also a wonderful time to clear a little space — physically and emotionally — before the bustle begins. Whether you’re organizing for visiting family, simplifying for comfort, or beginning to think about future transitions, the holidays offer a meaningful opportunity to sort through belongings with intention. This month, we’re exploring how decluttering can be both joyful and impactful when the items you no longer need become gifts to local neighbors who do.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by those you love! |

Holiday Decluttering With Purpose:Making Space, Giving Back, and Spreading Joy |
Holiday Decluttering With Purpose:Making Space, Giving Back, and Spreading Joy |
For many people (not just seniors), the holidays are a time of celebration, connection, and reflection. They can also bring a renewed desire for simplicity — to make room for guests, to ease the stress of excess “stuff,” or to begin preparing for future transitions. But sorting through long-loved possessions can be emotional, especially when items carry memories or were once cherished by family. One way to make this process easier — and far more meaningful — is to donate to organizations that ensure your items directly benefit those who need them most. This season, I’m highlighting two outstanding local nonprofits whose missions blend generosity, dignity, and community care. Common Threads Closet (Barberton)Common Threads Closet in Barberton serves individuals and families facing economic hardship by providing clothing and household necessities at no cost. Their “shopping experience” is thoughtfully curated, welcoming, and tailored to preserve dignity. Donations go directly onto their shelves, helping local individuals, seniors, and families who need support. They accept clothing of all sizes, shoes, accessories, bedding, small household items, books, and more — all of which become immediate blessings to someone in our neighboring communities.
The Giving Place (Medina)The Giving Place accepts gently used adult and children's clothing, household items, linens, decor, shoes, small appliances, and seasonal items — especially useful during the holidays. They also accept furniture and will even do free furniture pickups! Donated items are sold and the funds are used to support other charities in the area. Electronics RecyclingI'm a big fan of not letting anything go to waste and trying to keep things out of landfills, but sometimes that can be challenging. If you have electronic items you no longer need, you can take them to your local Goodwill donation-center participating in the Dell Reconnect program, which accepts devices (any brand, any condition) for free responsible recycling. A Few Tips to Make Holiday Decluttering EasierStart small & seasonal. Holiday décor, linens, winter gear, and kitchen items are great starting points because they’re already top-of-mind this time of year. Choose your “keepers” first. This reduces guilt and makes it clearer which items can be let go. Ask family for input when they’re home. Holiday visits are a good time to confirm who wants heirlooms — and who truly doesn’t. Let purpose lead the way. Knowing your items will help someone stay warm, feel welcome in their home, or have a happier holiday can make the process unexpectedly joyful. With each thoughtfully chosen item, you’re not just decluttering — you’re giving comfort and hope to neighbors who need it most. That’s the true spirit of the season. |

Create a “Holiday Donation Box” near your coat closet or basement stairs. Throughout November and December, add items you no longer need — an extra blanket, a duplicate kitchen tool, a gently worn sweater. When the box is full, drop it off at The Giving Place or Common Threads Closet. Small steps add up to big impact! |
